Project summary

As part of a city centre public realm and mixed-use development in Manchester, Vanda Coatings were commissioned to apply a finish coat to the external steel balustrades and railings installed across the terrace and step areas. The metalwork required an even, durable coating in a dark anthracite specification to complement the stone and glazed elements of the development.

Electrostatic spraying was selected for its ability to deliver a uniform finish around complex spindle profiles and post sections without overspray onto the surrounding stonework and glazing. All surrounding surfaces were masked and protected before application.

  • Full degreasing and preparation of all steel balustrade sections
  • Surrounding stonework, glazing and planting areas masked throughout
  • Electrostatic spray application for efficient coverage of spindle profiles
  • Two-pack acrylic topcoat in dark anthracite specification
  • Works completed in situ with no removal or remedial making good required
  • Snag inspection and sign-off on completion

Project outcomes

What the client achieved through on-site electrostatic spraying.

Uniform spindle coverage

Electrostatic application wraps around complex balustrade profiles, delivering an even finish on all faces without runs or missed areas.

No removal required

All metalwork coated in situ, avoiding the cost and disruption of removing and reinstating balustrade sections.

Durable exterior finish

Two-pack acrylic system provides long-term corrosion and weather resistance for external metalwork in a city centre environment.

Programme fit

Works completed within the live development programme without impacting other trades or delaying handover.
